Chess EndeavorsBy far the simplest freeware Windows application for viewing PGN files--the dominant text file format for chess games--is Winboard 4.2.7.
The only issue is the hideous initial color scheme, which one can easily fix in a few minutes at most.I returned to competitive Correspondence Chess in September 2013, opting to play in the ICCF.
The ICCF was established shortly after the Second World War, and recently crowned their 29th World Champion.
Further, their roots go back to 1928.
My first CC tournament--using postcards--was in the USCF's 1985 Golden Knight's Tournament,
when I scored +5=1-0 and advanced to the second round.
I tied for first place in my first Open Class tournament, earning me a berth in a Higher Class tournament that is in full swing. Twenty-nine days after the start of the clocks, 7 out of 21 games were completed despite one competitor taking a deserved three-week medical leave.
My most recent win came in early September 2014, and is available here.
The resignation was premature; while most chess engines evaluate the final position as favoring me by the equivalent of a minor piece, the reality is that Black could fight on with 40. .. Qg8 as my two-pawn advantage is seriously mitigated by the presence of bishops of opposite color, and my initiative was fizzling out. I certainly would not have given up on the game if I was playing Black, but defending Black's position was going to be a long and difficult task.

Coverage of Kasparov vs. Deeper Blue, March 1997NB: The featured chess game viewing applet, with its unique popup-window
for variations, was written in 1997. Sun has institutionalized problems with
Java's evolution since that time. Consequently, some features are partially
broken, particularly the ability to scroll through the text annotations.
A revamped online chessgame viewer with similar features and
fresh analysis is on the list, but not scheduled due to much more
